The official practice of Gustav Düben, Royal Swedish Hofkapellmeister 1663–1690
The thesis will consider Gustav Düben (c1629-1690) and the musical practice of the Swedish court in the second half of the 17 th century. Gustav Düben was, as Hofkapellmeister and organist at the German congregation in Stockholm , in hold of the most central musical office in Sweden during almost 30 years and was the main collector of the music constituting the extensive Düben collection (now in Uppsala university library). Despite this, still no extensive work has been dealing with him or his musical activity. The thesis will comprise an inquiry of the specific musical conditions of the royal court in Stockholm , including a survey of the liturgies of the royal court and those of the close related German congregation. In relation to Gustav Düben's official functions, I will focus on three aspects; his activity of collecting music, of re-arranging music (concerning text, score and form) and his compositions.
