Description: | Thick book with cardboard cover, clothed with bright leather. Front cover outside: Containing the number "78", the title "Libro 2/ di Motetti e Concerti/ G. D.// 1665" written later by a librarian (not GD's original title, that is found on the rear cover!) and two library labels; inside: librarian notes with lead-pencil and a library stamp. Rear cover outside: "Libro. 6./ di/ Sonate ? Ari?/ G D.// 1665.", written upside down, by GD's hand. Index on fol. 1r-1v, written by GD's hand. Fol. 2r is empty. The tabulature scores (fol. 2v-94r) are written by GD's hand. Fol. 95-142 are empty. Folio numbers on the verso side, left upper corner, added by GD; they begin with number 1 on fol. 2v, so that every sheet bears one number lower than it actually counts. The empty sheets are not numbered by GD seem to be of later date than the rest of the book; they have red edging and are of a different paper with a different watermark. |

Comments: | Lagerberg wrote the title on the front cover, classing this volume as number 2 in the serial of GD's big tabulature volumes, when he made the library signatures. On the rear cover another title by GD's hand (Lagerberg seems to have recoloured the original letters, wich are quite faint, but GD's hand can be identified clearly) is found, that marks this volume as number 6. This number is to be seen as the true one; not only because it is written by GD, but also according to the dates given inside the volume. The other four big volumes have dates between 1663 and 1665, which shows that this one is the latest and 6 is its right number. Lagerberg must have assumed that it should be number 2, because this is missing (the four remaining volumes bear the numbers 1, 3, 4 and 5, in GD's original titles), but we have to state that number 2 indeed is lost, if it at all existed. Grusnick says that this volume doesn't have any original title by GD (Grusnick 1966: 108 footnote 77), and means that the title on the rear cover shows that Düben planned to write a different book with "Sonate ? Ari?" before he started to fill it, because it doesn't say anything about "Motetti e Concerti" as the other volumes; but Grusnick also states that it must be volume number 6 because of the dates (Grusnick 1964: 81). If this book indeed was planned as volume number 6 in a serial of books with "Sonate ? Ari?" this would mean that there had once been 5 other such volumes, which all are lost now; that sounds a bit unlikely. It might be the case that he called this volume "Sonate ? Ari?" just because it contains pieces with smaller scoring only (the other volumes contain partly even bigger pieces with double choirs and many instruments, which are totally lacking in this volume), and that it still was ment to be the number 6 in the serial of big volumes. |
